Hepatic drug metabolism involves the conversion of fat soluble (non polar) drugs in water soluble (polar) metabolites which can be excreted by bile or urine. The large molecules are excreted by bile and small molecules by water. The rate at which drugs are metabolized by the mixed function oxidase enzymes varies in relation to genetic factors, induction or inhibition of enzymes, nutritional factors and the number of drugs administered simultaneously. Nutritional factors are of determing nature as malnutrition reduces enzyme activity and reduces the rate of drug metabolism. The drug factor is no less significant.
