lovegods and sex

Kamdeva, cupid and Eros represent three different civilizations, pattern of cultures and streams of consciousness. These are three strong offshoots of one archetype or tree of sex, mythology or collective unconscious's of humanity whatever you may call or name it. This shows the oneness and unity of thought underlining different mythologies/religions pertaing to different cultures and countries as the common source or origin of mythology. The main and basic pattern of thinking of humanity is same even today, the entire world over. The basic issues and problems concerning human nature are almost the same with minor modifications according to needs and requirements and environment of time and space. Love and anger are universal emotions.

The emotion of love (sex) has bee maximum expressed in mythology, literature, art and paintings. In mythology, Human emotions have been personified and embodied into flesh and blood as if they are living beings. It is beauty of mythology to depict human emotions on such a living plane. It was primitive way of understanding the abstractions and mysteries of life which otherwise were difficult to comprehend. In this personification lies the truth of life to be unraveled. The mythology is not abstract, speculation or mere products of imagination and fantasy of primitive man but rather it is living and vibrating mode of life of primitive people of theorizing and philosophizing life. This is their way of thinking, their way of life, their way of dealing with problems. The primitive mind has revealed everything in symbols and myths. The symbol or myth has no face value of its own as object or story but its value lies in being vehicle of feelings and thoughts to share something with fellows.

Shakespeare has nicely said “brevity is wit of soul” this aphorism beautifully applies to mythology. Symbol is way of expressing one’s inner feelings and notions about something in lucid and concise way. It is born out of economy of language. A symbol reveals something which volume of books can not reveal. The dominant religions of the world have their own peculiar symbols. The value attached to these symbols can only be appreciated and understood by the followers of that religion that have strong faith and inspiration in them Eros of Greeks In Greek mythology Eros is god of love. Its roman counterpart is cupid (desire) .Some myths speak of cupid as primordial god while other myths treat him as son of Aphrodite. In earlier mysteries of Greek, Eros is involved in coming into being of cosmos.

Aphrodite is Greek goddess of love, beauty and pleasure. Her roman equivalent is goddess venues. Eros ‘s mischievous role in love making affairs of gods and mortals causes bonds of love to develop into illicit sex relations. In later traditions he is represented as blind folded child. Eros embodies adult male and sexual power. Eros is first of all gods to come into being and existence. One myth speaks of Eros origin as Firstly; black winged Night laid a germless egg in the bosom of the infinite deeps of Darkness, and from this, after the revolution of long ages, sprang the graceful Love (Eros) with his glittering golden wings, swift as the whirlwinds of the tempest. He is said to mate in the deep Abyss with dark Chaos, winged like himself, and thus hatched forth our race, which was the first to see the light. Eros and psyche The myth of Eros and psyche is very similar to the Indian myth of Kamdeva and Rati. Psyche is replaced by Rati in Indian version of the myth.

The myth tells of the unending strugglefor love and trust between Eros and Psyche. Eros and psyche are same aspects of the same self as Kamdeva and Rati. Aphrodite was jealous of the beauty of mortal princess Psyche, as men were leaving her altars barren to worship a mere human woman instead, and so she commanded her son Eros, the god of love, to cause Psyche to fall in love with the ugliest creature on earth. But contrary to his wishes, Eros falls in love with Psyche himself and flies her away to his home. Their fragile peace is ruined by a visit from Psyche's jealous sisters, who cause Psyche to betray the trust of her husband. Wounded, Eros leaves his wife in the lurch, and Psyche wanders the Earth frantically, looking for her lost love. Eventually she approaches Aphrodite and asks for her help. Aphrodite imposes a series of difficult tasks and conditions on Psyche, which she is able to achieve by means of supernatural assistance and powers.. Aphrodite relents her tough stand and Psyche becomes immortal to live alongside her husband Eros. They give birth to a daughter, named Voluptas or Hedone symbolizing physical pleasure, bliss).

In Greek mythology, Psyche was the deification/ personification of the human soul. She was portrayed in ancient mosaics as a goddess with butterfly wings. Psyche was also the Ancient Greek word for 'butterfly’. Psyche is synonymous with butterfly. The Greek word psyche literally means "soul, spirit, breath, life or animating. Jung took the word psyche from Greek to explain his concept of unconscious. The trio of sex and love gods represented by Kamdeva, cupid and Eros is the embodiment and representative of following thread of thoughts and feelings prevailing in human psyche
