Kamdeva ---Indian version of cupid and Eros part 6
The whole mythological story revolves around two mother’s Rukmani and mayadevi and their son Kama or pradyumna. Kama the son is born out of eternal love between Krishna and Lakshmi.pradyumans is separated from his original mother by demon sambara. Mayadevi is not his originals mother but he is nurtured and nourished by mayadevi, the wife of demon sambara. Pradyumna don’t know that mayadevi is not his original mother. The compulsive fascination of mayadevi by the glowing, radiating and blooming adolescence of pradyumna speaks incestuous and narcissistic tendencies and propensities in man’s unconscious mind. Mayadevi sees her own reflection in pradyumna. The son is conscious of such unwanted moves and advances of mother to wards him. On many occasions he feels embarrassed and directly says to her mother, “why do you indulge in feelings so unbecoming the character of a mother? How affectionately she is fascinated by beauty and adolescence of son is worth noting when she says to her son, “Thou art not a son of mine; thou art the son of Vishnu,” mayadevi here represents the eternal narcissistic and selfish tendency of man. Many modern writers have elaborated this aspect of human nature. The great novel by D.H. Lawrence, “SONS AND LOVERS” might have gained inspiration from such mythological stories.
Kama is shown to possess various attributes in Puranik literature.
Madam—he who intoxicates with love and affection
Mara --- he who wounds
Pradyumna --- one who conquers all
Ananga ---- one who is without body
Manmatha --- he who agitates the mind
Kushumesu --- he whose arrows are flowers
The Indian mythology related to sex and love aspects of life represents more powerfully and in a exhaustive way these concepts than Greek or Latin mythology. The base or foundation of Indian thought is in sensuality but its head is above sensuality of life. Indian philosophy and mythology is like lotus flower whose roots are in mud but flowers and blossoming in air.
