what is molar pregnancy?

Molar pregnancy is that serious complication and condition of pregnancy in which conception takes place but instead of growing of fetus or embryo the placenta itself starts growing into small grape like masses called cysts. The placenta normally feeds and nourishes the fetus during pregnancy.

These may aggregate into a big neoplasm or tumor, faking or mimicking true or real pregnancy. This neoplasm has potential to turn into malignant tumor. The pregnant lady may be under the impressing that her embryo is growing as her abdomen is growing in size, but actually it is the neoplasm mass that is growing and undergoing degenerative changes.. This may be a life threatening situation if not immediately attended and addressed properly. True embryo or amniotic sac is totally absent. There are two dominant forms of Hydatidiform

Complete mole:

Molar pregnancy or Hydatidiform is principally the diseases of chorionic villi. Hydatidiform is one the trophoblastic disease/ tumor. It is condition of fetus when fetus does not grow at all instead the whole mass of conception starts growing abnormally into grapes like mass of cysts. The small cysts of various sizes grow into neoplasm.

In Complete mole

When a part of placenta starts growing into grape like small structures called cysts. Conception takes place but it does not take healthy turn instead the placenta tissue itself starts growing abnormally rather than supporting the growth and development of fetus and embryo. Thus results into tumor rather than baby. This is termed as molar pregnancy. A partial or incomplete molar pregnancy means that there is an abnormal placenta and only slight fetal development

Investigation

Sonography is reliable technique to confirm such type of pregnancy. The characteristic echogram of molar pregnancy is “snow storm appearance”. Vaginal bleeding is commonest presentation in 90% cases of molar pregnancy. The excessive vomiting of pregnancy may point to this disorder. This is called hyperemesis.
